Welcome to the first grade page!

Welcome parents and students to Mrs. Shaltens' page at Mill Creek Elementary School. I am so lucky to have such a super class! We are working very hard everyday to develop and improve our first grade skills!  

Our Specials Schedule is as follows:
Monday: Physical Education (wear sneakers)
Tuesday: Art
Wednesday: Library
Thursday: Music
Friday: Computers

We have recess and lunch at 11:50-12:40. Please make sure all lunch bags are clearly marked with your child's name please.  Also, if you could please have all money labeled in an envelope with your child's name on it would be greatly appreciated. 

In class we are working on:  determining fiction from nonfiction, writing our letters starting each at the top of the line, identifying blends, digraphs, short vowels and long vowels, learning about how we are good helpers at school ,learning about some important figures in our country who have made a difference,  discovering how scientists collect data, and understanding place value in order to compare numbers.   

The students have the following for homework every night:

(March 13 - 24 due to 2 snow days)

We have focused on the following word families so far: ​at, an , ap, ack, in, ing, ell, est, un, ash, ick, ill, op, ock, ake, ale, ail,ame, ate, ice, eat, eet, ine, ain, ake
The children are always encouraged to review words already learned in their homework books. There are many fun activities they can do to practice:


Δtriangle spelling

Δwrite with finger on a partner's back

Δcheer each word

Δstomp and clap the spelling of each word

use musical instruments like "shakers" to practice spelling each word

Try some of these fun activities at home!!
